The Transverse flute has appeared in poetry and pictures since the 12th century, and was used in courtly music in the 13th century Germany along with the fiddle, harp and the rote. Over A Century later it appeared as an outdoor military instrument with bagpipes, drums, bells and the trumpet.
This early time in music history had no concept of harmony instead its music is based on the concept of modes.
We dont know anything definate about the construction, repertoire or playing technique in these early times. However, we can make guesses using information from other periods of time which we will discuss later on in our Flute History Series.
